Learning to drive in Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough is an ideal town to learn to drive in. With plenty of dual carriageways, quiet residential streets and winding country lanes right on your doorstep, this town has got it all - whether you’re a complete beginner or getting ready to take your test.

If you’re completely new to the driver’s seat, you can’t get much better than Riverside Park Industrial Estate. Right by the River Tees, it’s located away from all the hubbub of town, and is normally empty at weekends and in the evenings. That makes it perfect for getting to grips with moving off, stopping, steering and clutch control. Alternatively, head to the sleepy suburbs. Berwick Hills is our top choice for perfecting some of those trickier manoeuvres like parallel parking.

When you feel ready to tackle dual carriageways, give the A66 or the A19 a go. These will both give you valuable experience driving at the national speed limit, handling slip roads and switching lanes. Or if you’re looking to give country roads a try, you can’t get much better than Church Lane. This extremely narrow road will be a great challenge, as you'll have to stay alert to oncoming vehicles, and be able to pull over into a safe place to let them pass.

Manual and automatic driving lessons

Some instructors are proud providers of both manual and automatic driving lessons in Middlesbrough.

We’re all different, and while some people want to learn in a manual car, others want to learn in an automatic. It’s important that you brush up on the benefits of both before deciding which option best suits you.

By learning in a manual car, you’ll be able to drive both manual and automatic vehicles once you pass. But getting an automatic licence means you can only drive automatics - and the lessons can be a little pricier too. That said, it can be quicker to learn in an automatic as there’s less to get your head around. Plus, if you’re going to be stuck at the traffic lights in Middlesbrough town centre on a regular basis, you might prefer an automatic so you don’t have to bother changing down gears every time. Ultimately, it’s up to you!

Driving test centre locations

Learning to drive is about far more than just test preparation. However, you’ll want to be prepared for the big day to give yourself the best possible chance of passing. That’s why your instructor will help you to pick a test centre and then make sure that you’re familiar with the routes that might come up in your driving test.
