Learning to drive in Luton

Luton is a large, busy, mostly urban town. There are plenty of challenges, from narrow streets to busy junctions to tricky roundabouts. But don’t worry, your instructor won’t throw you in at the deep end. They’ll start you out in a quiet, residential area to build your confidence up, before moving you on to the harder stuff.

The sleepy closes off Whitehorse Vale make great spots for beginners. There you can get to grips with the basics of driving, like moving off and stopping, steering, and signalling, without the pressure of other cars around. Kirby Drive is also good, being wide and flat, and the nearby closes are excellent to revisit when you start practising your manoeuvres.

As you get more confident, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got some dual carriageway experience. The A505 works well, but if you really want to stretch yourself, you can take to the M1 which cuts through the town. Remember, as a learner, you can only drive on the motorway with your instructor in a dual control car, and providing your instructor has deemed you capable.

When you’re approaching your test you’ll want to get plenty of practice on the roads around your chosen test centre. The Adelaide Street test centre has a good few tight, narrow roads around it, which can be hard to navigate. The A505 is also very close, so you make sure you’re confident with its junctions and roundabouts, as they’re often busy and confusing.

Manual and automatic driving lessons

We get that not everyone wants to go manual, so instuctors can offer automatic lessons in Luton too! There’s a lot to think about when it comes to choosing between automatic and manual driving lessons. A manual licence lets you drive both manual and automatic cars, whereas an automatic licence restricts you to automatics. Manual lessons also tend to be cheaper. However, you might have to take more lessons than if you were learning automatic, as there’s more to get your head around in a manual.

If you see yourself travelling at rush hour you might prefer an automatic, so you don’t have to worry about the gears in stop-start traffic. An automatic can also help you if you find hill starts tricky. On the other hand, a manual could offer you more control if you’ll be driving down long straight roads like the M1 a lot. We won’t push you either way. In the end, the decision is down to you and what suits you best!
