Learning to drive in Ealing

Over the years suburban development has turned Ealing from a little village into a London Borough of leafy suburbs and inner-city developments. This means it’s grown to have all sorts of great challenges for learner drivers. With one of our top-rated local instructors at your side, you’ll do great!

When you start learning your instructor will get you honing the basics on quiet residential streets. The roads around Ealing Cricket Club, like Kings Road and Hillcroft Crescent, are especially useful as they’re wide and straight. You’ll perfect clutch control, steering, signalling, and moving off and stopping. When you’re more advanced, it’s a good spot to return to for manoeuvre practice.

Throw yourself in at the deep end by following Uxbridge Road west. It’ll take you into the heart of Ealing, onto The Broadway, and onto a complex box junction where The Broadway meets the B455 and Spring Bridge Road. Keep an eye on the road markings and road signs so you don’t get mixed up. The A40 is nearby for another step up, providing some great dual carriageway experience. You’ll be breezing through your test in no time!

Taking your test in Ealing

The closest test centre to Ealing is the Greenford Test Centre (check it out below). The DVSA no longer publish test routes, but your instructor will help you get to know the roads around your chosen test centre. Each centre has its own unique challenges.

At the Greenford Test Centre you’ll begin on Robin Hood Lane or Horsenden Lane. It’s mainly residential roads around the test centre, so you could be asked to perform a manoeuvre early on. Otherwise, you’ll end up heading north along Melville Avenue to the busy A4090. From there you might go on to A4127, or slip off onto another series of residential roads, so it’s important you practise as much as you can around that area.

When it comes to the big day, make sure you stay nice and relaxed so you can give yourself the best chance of passing. Your instructor will have covered all the difficult roads with you, you just need to show your examiner you can do it!

Manual vs automatic

We understand that not everyone likes to go manual, so we provide automatic lessons in Ealing too!

Before you take your first lesson you’ll have to decide whether you want to drive a manual car or an automatic one. Manual lessons are often cheaper, and the licence allows you to drive both manual and automatic cars. An automatic licence restricts you to automatic cars, and the lessons are generally more expensive because there are fewer automatic instructors around.

Think what’ll suit you best around Ealing. If you expect to travel during rush hour you might prefer an automatic, as you won’t have to worry about gear changes in stop-start traffic. However, it’s often the case that automatic cars are more expensive to buy than manual, so bear that in mind if you’re on a tight budget. In the end, the choice is yours!
