Learning to drive in Doncaster

If learning to drive is the order of the day, Doncaster will have everything you need. From quiet residential areas to busy dual carriageways, you won’t be short of places to practise, no matter what your stage in the learner journey.

If you’re new to the road, we’d recommend getting to grips with the basics in a quiet residential area familiar to you. Give the areas around the racecourse a go if you’re stuck for ideas. Runnymede Avenue, Exeter Road and Wiltshire Road are all wide, quiet streets that are ideal for perfecting moving off, stopping and steering. They’ll also be good to return to once you’re ready to drill those trickier manoeuvres, like pulling up on the right-hand side and reversing two car lengths.

Before your test, you’ll need to get some experience driving on busier roads and handling roundabouts. To kill two birds with one stone, why not head to the A18? With plenty of big junctions and roundabouts, this busy main road will give you tons of practice at lane positioning and responding to road signs.

Don’t forget to take some time getting your head around winding country lanes too. Although quiet, these can be tricky as you’ll need to judge the right speed to take them at. If you’re up for a real challenge, head over to Hall Balk Lane. On this narrow road, you’ll need to spot hazards early on and pull over to let oncoming cars pass. With a trusted Midrive instructor at your side, you’ll nail it in no time!

Manual and automatic driving lessons

Guess what? You can choose from both manual and automatic driving lessons in Doncaster!

Make sure you think about which type of licence you’d like before you book your first lesson. If you take automatic lessons and qualify with an automatic licence, you’ll only be able to drive automatics. However, if you opt for manual, you’ll be able to drive both transmissions once you pass.

If you’re going to be driving short distances within Doncaster, you might prefer to drive an automatic car, since you won’t have to worry about pressing the clutch and changing gears each time you come to a standstill. On the other hand, if you’ll be driving longer distances down the A1(M) on a regular basis, you might prefer the control that a manual gives you. Whichever you choose, our instructors are ready to help you gain that licence!

Driving test centre locations

When your driving instructor thinks you’re ready, they’ll help you to pick a driving test centre. It’s important that you’re familiar with the area around your chosen test centre, so they’ll also show you all the right routes to practise before the big day. There are two test centres in the Doncaster postcode area, but a few more nearby - to view a full list of test centres in your area, go to the DVSA.
