Learning to drive in Blackburn

With a good mixture of A roads, busy urban areas and quiet residential streets, Blackburn has all the variety you need when it comes to learning to drive safely and confidently. We’d suggest sticking to residential areas near you when you’re starting out, as familiarity is always a plus.

Kirkstone Avenue and Kirkstone Drive connect to form a great starting circuit. Your instructor might take you here to get you started in the driver’s seat. It’s a great place to get accustomed to moving off and stopping, signalling, and changing gears. Wythburn Avenue, which dissects the two roads, is also handy. It has a gentle incline making it ideal for learning hill starts.

Once you’re getting more confident, we recommend taking advantage of the A666 to brush up on your dual carriageway skills. Despite the name, it’s not a beastly road. It’ll take you into the town centre, towards Blackburn Cathedral, where roundabouts, junctions, and one-way streets will test your observation skills, and your knowledge of road signs and markings.

As your practical driving test draws nearer, make sure that you get to know the areas around your test centre. This is likely to be the Blackburn with Darwen centre, so you could do worse than heading towards Darwen for some all-important practice! With one of our top-rated local instructors at your side, we’re sure you’ll do great!

Manual and automatic driving lessons

Whether you’re a manual or an automatic kind of person, we’ve got you covered in Blackburn.

If it’s time to take the plunge and get out on the road, make sure that you think carefully about which type of driving lessons you’d like to take. An automatic licence will qualify you to drive an automatic car, but a manual licence will qualify you to drive both transmission types. It’s also worth noting that automatic lessons tend to be pricier than manual as there are fewer instructors offering this option.

You might want to think about where you’ll be driving. Because of the East Lancashire Hills, part of Blackburn is characterised by steep slopes, so if you struggle with hill starts you might prefer an automatic. However, you might equally prefer a manual if you want to be able to quickly change down a gear for a little extra oomph on those hills. There are pros and cons to both transmissions, so choose wisely!
