Learning to drive in Aberdeen
Aberdeen’s as good as they come when you’re learning to drive. The city boasts a variety of roads that will make sure you develop into a well-rounded driver. From busy urban roads to winding rural lanes, Aberdeen’s got it all!
When you’re starting out you’ll want to practise on wide, quiet residential streets, where the pressure’s off. One example is Fairview Avenue. There’s only the odd parked car around, so it’s perfect for getting used to moving off and stopping, steering around obstacles, and getting to grips with gear changes. Nearby Fairview Grove is also handy for learning hill starts.
When you’ve got some confidence, the city centre provides plenty of busy urban roads to test your skills on, with roundabouts, box junctions, and dual carriageways galore. But if you’d rather stretch yourself on country roads, they’re never far from the edge of the city. Our favourite is the B999 which winds north. Be prepared for a narrow road with blind bends and hidden dips and rises.
Manual and automatic driving lessons
There’s a lot to think about when it comes to choosing between manual and automatic. A manual licence enables you to drive both manual and automatic cars once you pass. An automatic licence restricts you to automatics. Manual lessons also tend to be cheaper than automatic ones, but automatics can be easier to learn in, as there’s less to get your head around.
If you’ll be driving a lot in rush hour, an automatic might suit you best, so you don’t have to worry about gear changes in stop-start traffic. However, if you’re planning a lot of longer journies beyond Aberdeen, it might be better to go for a manual. You’ll have a greater sense of control with command over the gears. But we can only give you the info. It’s up to you to pick between the two!
